Ten shot dead in spate of attacks around Karachi

Karachi At least ten people were gunned down yesterday in different parts of Karachi. Five of the of victims were shot dead in Orangi Town, a slum, plagued by crime and bloody politics.

Government-owned hospitals have received the bodies of the victims. An investigation is expected to reveal who was behind the killings, but such shootings are usually attributed to the political, sectarian and ethnic rivalry or gang wars.

The Sindh High Court has ordered the police chief to submit a report on the reasons behind the shooting of 16 people on Wednesday alone.

The provincial police chief yesterday submitted his report to the court with vague findings that most of the killings were of ethnic in nature and not political.

The provincial government has taken multiple stringent steps but the killings continue.

Crackdown

Paramilitary rangers said in a crackdown in different areas of Karachi, some 19 suspects were rounded up and dozens of weapons including Kalashnikovs, pistols, grenades and a large quantity of rounds were recovered.

Since most of the killings are done by people riding on motorbikes the government has banned pillion riding. The ban deprives hundreds of thousands of the cheaper mode of transportation.

Yesterday, the provincial government lifted the ban to the relief of many.
