PESHAWAR: Annoyed Chitralis here on Friday staged protest to condemn the remarks of Interior Minister Rehman Malik about alleged involvement of the people of Chitral and Gilgit in target killing incidents in Karachi.
Led by former member of the National Assembly and leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali, the protesters gathered outside the press club and chanted slogans against the federal minister. They asked him to tender an apology over his remarks.
Speaking on the occasion, Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali and others demanded the government to immediately remove Rehman Malik as minister. They said the propaganda against the people of Chitral and Gilgit was part of the foreign agenda.
The JI leader said that Chitral and Gilgit were the most peaceful areas of the country. “The people of these valleys are peaceful and patriotic,” the Maulana said, adding, the minister should bring to book the real terrorists instead of beating about the bush. He asked the minister to name the culprits instead of blaming all the dwellers of Chitral and Gilgit for the unrest in Karachi.
Meanwhile, the Chitral Students Federation president Rizwan-uz-Zaman also condemned the minister’s remarks and asked President Asif Ali Zardari to take note of the issue. He said Chitralis were peaceful people and had nothing to do with the terror activities.
