Population control policy to be presented in KP cabinet soon

RECORDER REPORT :  PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Population Welfare, Saleem Khan said that the government is facing serious population challenges due to weak policies of the past regimes, saying that no concrete step was then taken to control growing ratio of population in the province.

Speaking at Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUj) Guest Hour Programme "Mulaaqat" here on Friday at Peshawar Press Club (PPC), he said the drafted population policy will be presented before the provincial cabinet very shortly for approval, which could be helpful to decline sharply increasing ratio of population in the province.


Arshad Aziz Malik, President Khyber Union of Journalists, General Secretary, Yousaf Ali, senior vice-president, Ali Hazrat Bacha and other office bearers, and journalists were present.

The Provincial Minister said that they have prepared a proposal for establishment of 100 family welfare centres in the province to meet with increasing population challenges.

He said that the government is trying to create awareness among masses through media to follow family planning principles to control increasing population in the province.

He said the people are deprived of basic health and other facilities due to rapidly increasing population day by day. He clarified that the government didn't sack any employees from the department, saying that more than 2,700 employees of the department and 300 project-based employees are serving the institute.

He said the government has no intention to sack them, but it will adjust them. He added that the government is facing serious population challenges due to weak policies of the past regimes, saying that there no initiative to control growing population in the province were taken.

Saleem Khan said that the government is taking all possible steps to control the rapidly increasing population in the province.

He said that the government has taken all possible initiatives for making improvement in life standard of the masses. He said the armed forces have rendered matchless sacrifices in war against terrorism and extremism.

The provincial Minister said that the war against terrorism is not Pakistan's war, but there are stakes of entire world, in which Pakistan has got success and acts of terrorism have been sharply declined in the province.

Regarding the Lowari Tunnel project, he said that the project had initiated by Qaid-e-Awam, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in district Chitral, and developmental work stopped in military General (Retd) Ziaul Haq era. He said the PPP government had resumed work on the project and first phase has been completed.

Saleem Khan said that the project will be completed with the cost of Rs.18 billion, saying that about seven billion have been so far spent on the scheme. He said the construction work was halted for six months on the scheme due to changing of design.

He informed that the Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has announced Rs.2 billion for the project. He added that the Chitral to Tajikistan road project is also under consideration. He maintained that the feasibility report has been prepared in this regard, but the Afghanistan is still under preparation process.

After the approval of feasibility report, he said that the project would be initiated. He added that the road not only will facilitate Chitral people, but the business community would also take benefit from it.

He observed that the development of Chitral has also suffered in wake of insurgency and terrorism situation in the province. Despite the odd circumstances, he said the government has initiated developmental schemes in district Chitral, which will yield good results in future.

Saleem Khan informed that the PIA will start its operational flight to Chitral by 16 October 2011, which will mitigate the suffering of local travellers.

Condemning the PML-N allegations against PPP Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari, he said that the people, who had signed agreement with dictator and fled from the country, are putting allegations against the democratic president of the country.

He said the President Asif Ali Zardari had played vital role for strengthening democracy through adoption of reconciliation policy. He said the President always tried to take all political forces into confidence, wants to nurture democracy in the country.

The government has delivered to the poverty-stricken masses in short span of time, he said and added that it would continue welfare of the people till the completion of five-year term. Later, he announced a grant of Rs.30,000 for Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUj).
