Pakistan: Wapda to exploit hydropower potential

CHITRAL, Oct. 02 -- Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has stepped up efforts to optimise the use of hydropower potential by initiating a number of projects in the country due to increasing electricity demand, said Chairman Wapda Shakil Durrani on Friday.

"These projects will not only help bridge the gap between electricity generation and its consumption but also improve the rate of low-cost hydel electricity in the system to stabilise tariff," Durrani said during a visit to the site of under-construction Golen Gol Hydropower Project.
Wapda`s secretary, general manager (north), general manager (hydel) operation and project director were also present during the visit.
The chairman Wapda said 106 megawatt Golen Gol Hydropower Project was part of the least-cost energy generation plan being executed by Wapda on priority. He said the contractor, Sambu of Korea, had been tasked with completing the project in four years.
He expressed the hope that the project would significantly contribute towards socioeconomic development of the country in general and Chitral in particular.
Durrani said locals would be preferred for lower jobs during implementation of the project.
He directed the project authorities to study the possibility of providing irrigation water to the suburbs of the project site for cultivation.
The chairman Wapda said work on 1,400MW hydropower projects was underway in the country. He added that the 72MW Khan Khawar Project had been completed, while three other projects of 350MW would be completed in 2012.
He said Wapda had awarded 13 contracts of Diamer Bhasha Dam Project for construction of offices, colonies and road infrastructure in the dam area.
General manager (north) Wapda Rashid Bangash and Consultants` Project Manager Dr Herald Samson briefed the chairman on the progress so far made on the project.
Earlier, the chairman inaugurated Wapda staff colony for Golen Gol Hydropower Project in Koghuzi, Chitral.
