Apple industry needs attention to penetrate in the world market

ISLAMABAD: Owing to quality and standard crop yield, Pakistan has sufficient potential to penetrate in the world apple market but needs to develop this industry properly.

"The world apple export market forms the volume of around 5 million tones per year with France, Chile, Belgium, USA and Netherlands sharing the major chunk," said Chief Executive Officer of Harvest Trading, Ahmad Jawad.

He said Pakistan could also get proper share in this market provided it takes measures for the development of apple industry.

He said that Iran and China were the regional competitors of Pakistan with regard to apple export, however, apples produced in the country have tremendous potential due to good colour, size, quality, keeping quality, juice contents, crunchiness and aroma.

"So immediate measures are required to tap this potential and penetrate in the world market," he said while talking to apple growers of Quetta.

Amhed Jawad urged the government of Baluchistan and Khyber Pkahtunkhwa to call up conference to devise a comprehensive strategy for the development of apple industry.

According to Harvest Trading statement, Jawad said, the government had taken initiatives and established Quetta Apple Grading Plant through the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) in August 2008.

However, this plant is closed now due to many issues and PHDEC looking again for any investor who may run this plant.

He said, Balochistan has 102,300 hectors under cultivation and produces 220,000 tons of apples per year.

The province produces a variety of apples, namely Tor Kulu, Shin Kulu, Amri, Mashadi and Kashimiri, Katja, Galas and Spurs, in the season, which starts from mid-July and ends in October.

Proper facility of enhancing cosmetic look of apples after washing and waxing and enhancing their shelf life would boost exports of apples from Balochistan, hence improving the income for growers, creating local employment, confidence building of local traders to export their product into the international markets.

Apples have been grown as Commercial Fruit Plants in Balochistan and Khyper Pakthunkhwa since long and because of its attractive income, apple plantation was taken up by the growers in Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Parachinar, Chitral, Hunza, North and South Waziristan Agencies.

District Swat covers an area of approximately 4000 square miles within the Malakand Division.

The area is mainly a river valley surrounded by mountains, which also have fertile valleys feedings into the main Swat Plain.

District Swat is the most important of all the apple producing districts of KPK and next in importance come the districts of Mansehra, Dir, Abbottabad, Chitral and Hunza.
