If you were a very rich guy or gal in the 1950s, you couldn't have bought a car any more exclusive than this Rolls-Royce Phantom IV. Proof? Look no father than the Aga Khan III of Pakistan, whose ruby-red car is about to up for sale at Pebble Beach next week,
The leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims was loaded, complete with a ruby collection reportedly worth millions. He bought this 1952 Phantom, with divided driver and passenger compartments, says the auctioneer, Gooding & Co.l There is a silver brush and comb in the rear seat, and a complete picnic set. Aga Khan's coat-of-arms appears on the doors.
When the car came to the U.S. in 1960 after Aga Khan's death, Gooding says it was likely the first of its kind here. It passed through several owners, including a hotel that reportedly used it to fetch guests. Other than new paint and detailing, it is largely original. Gooding estimates it could fetch as much as $1.1 million.
