Govt urged to cut airfare for Chitral

CHITRAL: Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) district president Abdul Wali Khan on Tuesday expressed concern over exorbitant fare of the Pakistan International Airlines on Chitral route and termed it beyond the affordability of the people of the district.

“The airline is facing losses on the route as the poor people of the landlocked area can’t afford over Rs5,000 one-way ticket,” the PPP-S leader said, suggesting the government to cut the fare to attract more passengers.

Abdul Wali said the successive governments had given special concession to the inhabitants of Chitral keeping in view the lack of development in the area-wise largest district of the province.

“The Pakistan People’s Party-led government has not only increased the PIA fare for Chitral but also shifted the funds for Lowari Tunnel to other areas,” he lamented, urging the government to provide PIA tickets to the people of Chitral on concessionary rates till the completion of the Lowari Tunnel.

The PPP-S leader said the PPP-led government had been showing discriminatory attitude towards Chitral despite it being one of its strongholds. He also came down hard on the elected representatives from Chitral for not raising the issue at the proper forums.
